Plain answers to what AEO and GEO actually are, how they differ from SEO, and how a brand earns a place inside AI answers — from Ranklore, a Singapore AI-visibility studio.
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is structuring a website so answer engines — Google's featured snippets and AI assistants — can extract a clear, correct answer to a question and attribute it to your brand. In practice: concise answer "capsules", question-style headings, FAQ and structured data, and facts that are easy to quote. AEO targets the moment a user gets a direct answer rather than a list of links.
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is optimizing a brand to be cited inside AI-generated answers from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Google AI Overviews and Gemini. Research — notably the 2024 Princeton GEO study — found content that cites sources, includes statistics and uses direct quotations is significantly more likely to be referenced in generative answers. GEO also depends on being crawlable by AI bots and being a clearly defined entity the model can recognise.
Traditional SEO optimises to rank a page in a list of blue links. AEO and GEO optimise to be the answer itself — quoted in a snippet or cited in an AI response, often with no click. SEO fundamentals (crawlability, relevance, authority, structured data) still matter and overlap heavily, but AEO/GEO add emphasis on extractable answers, factual precision, citations, entity clarity, and access for AI crawlers. They're complementary, not separate.
There's no instant switch — AI visibility is earned. The levers that work: (1) allow AI crawlers (GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended) in robots.txt; (2) make your brand a clear entity with consistent structured data, an "about" identity and an llms.txt; (3) publish content that directly answers real questions, with cited sources, statistics and quotable phrasing; and (4) earn mentions on sources the models trust. It compounds over weeks to months.
If your customers ask AI assistants for recommendations, comparisons or answers in your category, then yes. A growing share of searches now end inside an AI answer rather than a click-through — if your brand isn't present there, a competitor's is. GEO is most urgent for considered purchases, professional services, health, and local businesses where people ask "who/what/which is best" questions.
Technical foundations (crawlability, structured data, llms.txt) take effect as soon as engines re-crawl — days to a few weeks. Ranking and AI-citation gains from content and authority typically compound over roughly 3–6 months, because they depend on new pages being indexed, trusted and referenced. GEO can move faster than classic SEO for well-structured, well-cited answer content, but durable visibility is built, not bought.
It varies widely with scope. A one-off technical and AEO/GEO audit is usually a few hundred to low-thousands of Singapore dollars; ongoing content and optimisation programmes are typically billed monthly and scale with the number of pages, languages and competitiveness of the market. Price tracks the work required to become genuinely citable — there's no fixed rate. Ranklore scopes each engagement to the result the client needs.
